A fun way for our ESL students to learn English is to participate in the Science curriculum offered here at Oak Hill. Through Botany the students perfect their observation skills and with that comes a long list of adjectives. They are learning groups of English words like colors, sizes, shapes, textures, sounds, directions, and scents. The students probably do not even realize the number of words added to their vocabulary through science!
In one laboratory experiment the students were instructed to dissect a flower. They had to carefully follow instructions, make observations, and draw and label those observations in their Laboratory Notebooks.
The students are very precise in documenting their specimens.
More observations were made using a microscope. The students greatly enjoyed seeing the tiniest of cells come to life right before their eyes!
Everyone knows a picture is worth a thousand words! By observing the specimens and drawing these lovely picutures in their notebooks our ESL students added more English vocabulary, phrases, and concepts to their growing minds.
