Many may think studying mathematics is not essential in a classical model education. So why teach it and at an advanced level for some students? The orderly process of mathematics (especially geometry) relates to many disciplines of logic and compliments a variety of careers.
While studying geometry, students learn the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning. Mr. Carl Thoburn (known as Mr. T) stresses proofs in class requiring each student to explain his proof by deductive reasoning using an overhead projector. These proofs are done formally at first.Later students can explain proofs by informal reasoning. Both direct and indirect proofs are done requiring students to consider when it is better to use indirect proofs.
Mr. T requires students to keep a five part notebook consisting of assignments, class
notes, postulates, definitions, and theorems. This is a valuable tool for
review and retention and also encourages good study habits, giving students useful
skills for college. Material outside of the text book is taught which students are tested on as well.
"The chief forms of beauty are order and symmetry and definiteness, which the mathematical sciences demonstrate in a special degree." -Aristotle
