God First, then Game: The Recipe for a Stellar Team

“What time is it? Game Time!” This familiar phrase can be heard in exchanges between the exited participants of this year's Varsity Boys Soccer Team. It is a phrase that gives words to the enthusiasm of the new soccer season. Yet these boys already know that as in any true sport, soccer is much more than a mere playtime. With practices already begun, all of the Oak Hill athletes understand that dedication, discipline, and determined teamwork are a necessary part of the sport and of a godly character.

These soccer fundamentals are life lessons as well, and they have been taught from the very first by Coach Robert Murphy. By centering the practice around basics, endurance, responsibility, and prayer, Coach Murphy insures not only that the players are ready for the game, but more importantly that they are ready to glorify God. He does so through simple but important means such as drilling footwork and passes, making shooters chase missed shots, sending students jogging around the field, and beginning and ending with prayer.

With such an electrifying and determined start, hopes for a great season are sure to be met. The first game is on September 7th, the first day of school. As a result, the Varsity boys will need all the encouragement and practice they can get. A good turnout and a developed commitment to God first and then to game, however, will be sure to make our team shine.
